A Greek court will decide as early as Tuesday or Wednesday whether the 41-year-old man accused in the death of a paramedic on the island of Syros should remain under house arrest or be transferred to pretrial detention, following a fresh round of testimony before the Council of Misdemeanor Judges.
The suspect has remained under house arrest since it was provisionally ordered pending the council's ruling.
He has maintained, according to reports, that he acted in self-defense after the 41-year-old paramedic entered his home carrying a knife.
The victim's family, however, has submitted a formal statement alleging inconsistencies in the suspect's account, according to broadcaster ANT1.
They argue his description of events during the crime-scene reconstruction differs from his later testimony.
They also point to footage showing his wife leaving the house quickly and in apparently good physical condition, despite the suspect's claim that the victim had struck her inside the home — questioning how an injured person could move that fast.
The family further notes that the suspect has made no mention of a threat involving the knife the victim allegedly carried, nor referenced any attempted robbery.
The victim's two children have relocated to Athens to live with their father, who spoke to ANT1 and suggested his ex-wife may have received a phone call or threat prompting her to go to the house.
"There's no reason she would have gone there otherwise," he said, speculating something may have provoked a sudden change in her state of mind.
