A 51-year-old man has been arrested on Corfu on suspicion of repeatedly sexually abusing his 8-year-old granddaughter, after a doctor reportedly identified signs of abuse during a medical examination, authorities said.
The investigation began after the girl visited a doctor with her mother. The doctor noticed injuries consistent with abuse and alerted the mother, who reported the case to police, according to Greek public broadcaster ERT.
The girl later gave a statement to police in the presence of a child psychologist, according to reports. Investigators are examining how long the alleged abuse continued and whether other evidence or witnesses can shed light on the case.
The suspect, an Albanian national and permanent resident of Corfu, was arrested and brought before a prosecutor. He denied the allegations and was given until Monday to testify before judicial authorities.
The charges reportedly include rape, sexual abuse of a minor, indecent assault and sexual activity between relatives.
The girl’s parents have filed a formal complaint, while the preliminary investigation continues.
Greek authorities have not released the child’s identity or details that could identify her. The case remains under investigation, and the allegations have not been tested in court.
The arrest comes amid heightened attention in Greece to the protection of children from sexual violence and the responsibility of medical professionals and relatives to report suspected abuse.
