Newly released security camera footage shows a 26-year-old Afghan suspect calmly wheeling a suitcase containing the body of British woman Elizabeth-Jane Ross
through central Athens before abandoning it in a derelict building in Kypseli, Greek police said.
The footage, captured the night of July 16, shows the suspect moving from an address in Exarchia to the abandoned property in Kypseli, where he left the suitcase before departing minutes later carrying only a backpack. Investigators say he also sent misleading messages from the victim's phone in an apparent attempt to deceive her friends, family and authorities into believing she was still alive.
His identification followed confirmation of the victim through Interpol.
The suitcase was found around midday on July 18 by a homeless man inside the abandoned building, after nearby residents had reported a strong odor.
Inside, wrapped in black fabric, was the victim's body, which had been dismembered and was in an advanced state of decomposition.
Ms. Ross's last confirmed contact with anyone in her circle came the night of July 15.
No one saw her again after that night, though messages continued to be sent from her phone in the days that followed.
Police have charged the suspect with intentional homicide, robbery and weapons offenses.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the killing.
