The Greek Counter-Terrorism Directorate has launched a major investigation after a cache of military-grade C4 plastic explosives was discovered on a university campus in Athens, raising fears of a domestic terrorism plot.
A passerby walking their dog discovered a bag containing the explosives in an outdoor area of the Athens University campus in the Kaisariani district and immediately alerted the police.
A police bomb disposal unit dispatched to the scene found four rectangular blocks of C4 explosive, a roll of slow-burning fuse, and a common detonator.
Authorities emphasized that the components were not assembled into a bomb and posed no immediate threat of detonation.
The investigation was quickly taken over by the Counter-Terrorism unit due to the nature of the materials and the location of the discovery near the university’s shooting range, an area with historical ties to militant group activity.
The leading theory among investigators is that the explosives were a hidden cache belonging to an urban guerrilla group.
Forensic analysis is underway to trace the origin of the C4 and to determine if it matches materials used in past terrorist attacks in Greece.
The area was cordoned off for several hours as specialists combed the scene for further evidence. No one has been arrested and no group has claimed responsibility for the explosives.
