Constantine P. Cavafy, the great Alexandrian Greek poet, has taken up permanent residence on Athens' most celebrated pedestrian street — cast in bronze, seated on a park bench, and waiting for company.
A life-sized sculpture of Cavafy was unveiled on Dionysiou Areopagitou Street, the sweeping walkway that skirts the base of the Acropolis, in a donation from the Onassis Foundation to the City of Athens.
The work, created by sculptor Praxiteles Tzanoulinos, is positioned in front of the Onassis Library and the Onassis Mandra — placing one of the Greek language's most revered literary figures at the intersection of ancient heritage and contemporary cultural life.
Unlike traditional monuments that elevate their subjects beyond reach, the Cavafy sculpture is designed for human contact. Visitors and residents are invited to sit beside the poet, turning an encounter with one of history's great literary figures into something conversational and immediate.
Mr. Tzanoulinos cast the figure in bronze with a high-durability patina suited to the demands of a busy outdoor thoroughfare.
Cavafy, born in Alexandria in 1863 and shaped by the Greek diaspora experience, never lived in Athens — making the placement of his likeness on the slopes of the Acropolis a symbolic act of homecoming, anchoring his legacy at the center of the city and culture he wrote toward but never quite inhabited.
