A 42-year-old British tourist has been killed and his 14-year-old son injured after a quad bike they had rented during their holiday on the Greek island of Corfu, veered off a road and plunged into a three-metres-deep ditch, police said.
Authorities identified the British victim as Ray Lally and his son Arajun. T
They said the two were on vacation in the region of Almyros, northern Corfu, when the tragic incident occurred – the latest in a recurring pattern of tourist quad bike fatalities on Greek islands.
“An investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the crash,” a senior police official said. The crash occurred at approximately 1:30 p.m on Tuesday, setting emergency responders to a scramble to free both victims.
They were both transported to the General Hospital in Corfu, where the father was pronounced dead.
Arajun, 15, was being treated for a string of leg and hand injuries. None were reported to be ife-threatening.
Police have opened an investigation into whether speed, road conditions or mechanical failure caused the crash.
British consular authorities have been informed and are assisting the family.
ATV and scooter rentals are widespread on Greek islands including Corfu, Santorini and Mykonos, drawing thousands of foreign tourists each summer.
Safety authorities have repeatedly flagged the risk posed by unfamiliar visitors navigating narrow island roads on vehicles they have little experience operating — a warning that has so far produced no binding national regulatory response.
