A Brazilian man has been arrested at the Athens airport after authorities discovered he had swallowed 100 packets of cocaine, a haul of more than one kilogram and one of the largest of its kind ever recorded in Greece, police have said.

The man was detained on Monday at Eleftherios Venizelos Athens International Airport after arriving on a flight from Paris that had originated in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Authorities described the smuggling method as extremely dangerous, noting that the man would have died within minutes if any of the plastic packets had ruptured inside his body.

Police released X-ray images showing the man’s abdomen filled with the small, drug-filled containers. An investigation into the trafficking network is underway.
