A 14-year-old boy who died after drowning in the Arachthos River while attempting to save his friend has become a lifesaver for at least three people through organ donation.
His selfless act has brought a profound sense of hope to recipients.
The recipient of the young boy’s liver, a 43-year-old man who had battled cancer for years, described the donation as "the ultimate act of love." Speaking to Mega television, the man said, "It’s something you can’t put into words. This child made the greatest sacrifice — first to save his friend, and then to give life to people who were suffering."
He explained his own long struggle with cancer and the desperate need for a transplant, noting how this donation arrived when all hope seemed lost.
His transplant was successfully performed at Laiko Hospital in Athens, and doctors are now closely monitoring his recovery.
The 14-year-old's two kidneys were donated to a 53-year-old patient in Athens and a 32-year-old in Thessaloniki. Additionally, his corneas will help a child suffering from poor vision. The transplant to the 32-year-old has already been completed, and doctors report the patient is currently in recovery.
Relatives and friends said their final goodbyes to the 14-year-old on Monday in Agia Paraskevi, Arta.
His tragic death, followed by the compassionate decision for organ donation, underscores the profound power of such gifts and their ability to bring hope and renewed life to those in desperate need.
