A 62-year-old Belgian tourist has suffered serious facial injuries after losing his footing while attempting to take a photograph from the edge of a cliff on the Ionian island of Lefkada, authorities said.

The man fell onto rocks below a viewpoint near the village of Karya, sustaining extensive facial injuries.

Emergency services transported him to Lefkada General Hospital, where his condition was stabilized.

Doctors indicated he may require transfer to a specialist hospital in Athens for reconstructive surgery.

The accident is the latest in a series of incidents involving foreign visitors at scenic but hazardous locations across Greece.

Authorities have repeatedly warned tourists to exercise caution near cliff edges, coastal viewpoints and remote hiking routes, warnings that go largely unheeded during peak season when visitor numbers surge.

Lefkada, renowned for its dramatic Ionian coastline and clifftop panoramas, draws thousands of tourists annually, with elevated viewpoints among its most photographed attractions.
