Traffic police in the Greek capital stopped nearly 2,500 vehicles in a four-hour span Sunday night, citing nearly a dozen drivers for alcohol violations and towing an electric scooter after its rider failed a sobriety test.
The intensified checks serve as a focal point of a national road safety campaign aimed at curbing accidents during the peak holiday travel season.
Authorities confirmed that a woman riding an electric scooter in central Athens was flagged during the sweep. After tests confirmed she was over the legal alcohol limit, officers issued a €300 ($330) administrative fine and impounded the two-wheeler via tow truck.
Traffic police stated the operation highlights a zero-tolerance approach to dangerous behavior during the festive period.
While only 11 drivers were cited out of the thousands stopped, officials argue the high visibility of patrols acts as a critical deterrent.
Greece has ramped up enforcement in urban centers following a rise in fatal accidents and growing public concern over the unregulated use of electric scooters.
Police warned that surprise checkpoints will continue on major thoroughfares through the New Year.
