Greece is moving forward with an ambitious expansion of its metro network, planning to open 15 new stations by the end of the decade, primarily along Line 4, to connect more parts of the capital currently underserved by mass transit.

The project is expected to significantly transform commuting in Athens.

The new stations will be added along the Alsos Veikou–Goudi segment of Line 4, which is projected to serve about 340,000 passengers daily and remove approximately 53,000 private vehicles from the roads each day.

In addition to Line 4, the government is advancing extensions to the existing Line 2 (Red Line), specifically toward Western Athens.

Since May 2023, the extension toward Ilion has been in the bidding phase. Authorities are now awaiting financial offers in the second round of the tender process and still need to secure funding for this segment.

This extension includes a 4-kilometer (2.5-mile) segment with three new stations:

Palatiani, at the intersection of Thivon and Andrea Papandreou streets, with two access points.

Ilion, at the intersection of Thivon and Elaion streets, also with two entrances and plans for future connectivity to Line 4 toward Petroupoli.

Agios Nikolaos, located beneath the street of the same name and nearby parkland, between Paramythias, Olynthou, Zitsis, and Ag. Nikolaou streets.

The project also includes an expansion of the Eleonas depot, with an additional 20,000 square meters (about 215,000 square feet) at the corner of Agias Annis and Pierias streets.

During a 2024 event hosted by the Municipality of Acharnes, former officials from the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport announced that Line 2 will eventually extend as far as Menidi (Acharnes), with future stops planned for Kamatero, Zephyri, and Acharnes. Mayor Spyros Vrettos welcomed the news, calling it "a dream that is finally coming true."

Acharnes, the most populous municipality in East Attica, has long suffered from limited transit access. Vrettos said the metro extension would ease congestion and significantly improve connections to central Athens.

Also under consideration is a proposed Line 2 extension to Glyfada with three additional stations. However, that project remains a lower priority due to limited funding resources.

Athens’ metro system currently consists of 66 stations, providing crucial daily transportation to tens of thousands of residents and visitors. The upcoming expansions are expected to enhance connectivity, reduce reliance on private cars, and promote sustainable urban mobility.
