A gunman sprayed Uzi-type fire outside a packed nightclub in the Tzitzifies district of Kallithea, south Athens, early Sunday, wounding one woman and triggering a stampede of panicked patrons before police arrested the suspect at the scene.
The woman was transported to a private clinic for treatment; her condition was not immediately disclosed by authorities.
Staff and customers were inside the venue when the shooting erupted, with witnesses describing scenes of chaos as people scrambled for cover.
The suspect was detained on the spot. Greece's OPKE anti-crime unit — a specialist rapid-response force — was deployed in strength to secure the venue and launch a forensic sweep.
Officers are collecting shell casings and will review security camera footage from the establishment to establish a timeline and determine the motive.
The area around the nightclub remained cordoned off Sunday morning as the investigation continued. Police have not yet released the identity of the suspect or confirmed whether the attack was targeted or indiscriminate.
