A luxury boutique in Athens' upscale Kolonaki district has boarded up its windows ahead of protests planned in the Greek capital on Wednesday, reflecting growing unease among merchants after violent unrest and looting in France.
The store, which sells high-end clothing and accessories on Voukourestiou Street, covered its display windows with protective panels on Tuesday, leaving only its main entrance open.
Voukourestiou is one of the city's main luxury shopping streets, lined with international designer brands.
Some business owners fear the demonstrations could turn violent, following recent clashes and attacks on shops in France and Italy.
The concern comes days after Konstantinos Kyranakis, secretary of Greece's governing New Democracy party, warned that some groups were trying to bring scenes of violence from European cities to Greece and to draw very young people into them.
"There is no way we will let our country become like the streets of Paris," Mr. Kyranakis told state broadcaster ERT.
Central Athens has a long history of violent protests.
Riots in 2008 and during Greece's decade-long debt crisis left hundreds of stores and banks damaged or burned, though large-scale unrest has been rare in recent years.
