Athens is rolling out a new network of "smart" traffic cameras that will automatically issue fines to drivers for speeding and running red lights, with the first device set to be installed at a major downtown intersection.
Authorities said the first camera will be placed at the junction of Panepistimiou and Vasilissis Sofias avenues.
It is part of a new system that, unlike older cameras, will automatically process violations and issue penalties.
A total of 2,000 of the new cameras will be installed on roads across the capital that have a high rate of accidents and violations.
The move comes after police in Athens reported 38,567 traffic violations and 13 deaths in June alone.
Other high-risk intersections slated for camera installation include Kifissias with Ethnikis Antistaseos and Mesogeion with Halandriou.
