In a historic deep-sea archaeological mission, divers have for the first time recovered artifacts from the wreck of the HMHS Britannic, the sister ship of the Titanic, which sank off the coast of the Greek island of Kea in 1916.

The complex operation, which took place at a depth of 120 meters (400 feet), was led by British historian Simon Mills and supervised by the Greek Ephorate of Underwater Antiquities.

A team of professional divers retrieved dozens of objects, including the ship's observation bell, a signal lantern, and decorative tiles from its Turkish bath.

The Britannic, which was serving as a hospital ship during World War I, sank in less than an hour after striking a German mine.

Of the 1,065 people on board, 30 perished.

Despite challenging currents and low visibility, the dive team successfully recovered the artifacts, which will undergo conservation before becoming part of the permanent exhibit at the future National Underwater Antiquities Museum in Piraeus.
