The uninhabited and archaeologically rich Greek island of Keros will host its first-ever live concert in September, a special, internationally broadcast event that will be the highlight of the 10th anniversary Koufonisia Classical Music Festival.

Keros, which has been uninhabited since 1968 and is home to the oldest known sanctuary ever discovered, will serve as a unique backdrop for the performance.

The concert will be directed by Michail Marmarinos and will feature prominent artists including baritone Dimitris Tiliakos and actress Olia Lazaridou.

The event is the centerpiece of the wider festival, which runs from Aug. 20 to Sept. 10.

Under the artistic direction of Kornilios Michailidis, this year’s theme is “Five Millennia of Greek Sound,” exploring the history of Greek music from antiquity to the present.

The limited-attendance concert on Keros is being co-organized with the Cyclades Ephorate of Antiquities and aims to turn a globally significant archaeological site into a living musical monument.
