All 109 passengers were safely evacuated after a ferry ran aground on a reef near the island of Evia, but authorities have launched an investigation into the captain for failing to promptly report the incident.
The ferry, the Panagia Paravouniotissa, struck rocks around 6:50 p.m. on its route from Nea Styra to Agia Marina.
Passengers described a loud scraping sound and a sudden jolt as the vessel listed.
A flotilla of private boats, coordinated by rescue services, evacuated all passengers and the nine-member crew by 9 p.m. No injuries were reported.
However, the Ministry of Shipping and Island Policy said it is investigating the accident, noting that a citizen reported the grounding to authorities before the captain did.
Some passengers also criticized the initial response, with one, Ms. Athina Apostolopoulou, telling SKAI TV that there were no official announcements and that the crew seemed to panic.
