A pilot deployment of artificial intelligence traffic cameras in Attica has exposed rampant driving violations, with a single unit on Syngrou Avenue recording over 1,000 cases of mobile phone use and seatbelt infractions in just 96 hours.
Operating from Dec. 16 through Dec. 19, the AI system delivered its first data, underlining the scale of lawlessness on the capital's roads. beyond the phone and seatbelt offenses, the Syngrou camera detected approximately 800 speeding incidents.
Red-light running also remains a critical issue. The system captured 480 violations at the Mesogeion-Chalandri junction and another 285 at the intersection of Vouliagmenis and Tinou avenues.
The initiative marks the first use of AI-powered enforcement on Attica’s roads.
The pilot covers eight high-risk locations recommended by the Hellenic Police, including central arteries like Panepistimiou Street and Vasilissis Sofias Avenue, as well as sites in Rafina and Kallithea.
Unlike traditional speed traps, these units automatically detect complex offenses, including illegal use of emergency lanes.
Authorities stated the findings validate plans for a massive nationwide rollout.
The government aims to install a network of 2,500 cameras—including 500 mounted on public buses—to curb accident rates.
In parallel, the Region of Attica is preparing to integrate an additional 388 units into the National Traffic Management System.
