A 14-year-old boy has been arrested on the Greek island of Lesbos after confessing to starting a wildfire with a lighter while playing with friends, authorities have said.
The fire broke out Thursday evening in a grassland area in the village of Dafia but was quickly extinguished by firefighters.
According to the Fire Service's investigative unit, the boy admitted he was trying to burn some grass that was irritating him and his friends when the fire spread out of control.
While an official fire service statement identified the boy as a Greek national, local media reported his parents are of Bulgarian nationality and were working in a nearby village at the time.
A case file will be submitted to the Mytilene prosecutor's office, and a fine of up to 3,000 euros may be imposed. No charges have been filed against the parents for neglect.
