Twelve people died and 487 were injured — 10 seriously, 477 lightly — in 415 traffic accidents across the Attica region in September, according to the Attica Traffic Police Directorate.
Authorities identified careless and inattentive driving, violations of regulatory road signs, and pedestrians disregarding traffic rules as the leading causes of the crashes.
Police said failure to wear a protective helmet among motorcycle and moped riders and passengers worsened the severity of injuries in many cases.
During the same period, targeted enforcement operations by the Attica Traffic Police — part of ongoing efforts to improve road safety and strengthen traffic policing — resulted in 32,163 recorded violations, including 234 classified as misdemeanor-level offenses.
The figures underscore Greece's continued struggle with road safety, even as authorities have ramped up enforcement measures, including expanded camera networks at high-risk intersections, in recent years.
Police have not specified which violation categories accounted for the largest share of September's citations, though alcohol-impaired driving, speeding and red-light violations have consistently ranked among the most common offenses recorded in prior monthly reports from the directorate.
