Iskra: Greek demand for dignity dragged from one summit to the other

Syriza's radical left fraction, known as the LeftPlatform, has issued a statement stressing the Greek government to maintain a firm position in negotiations with creditors.

The statement published in Iskra.gr, a website reflecting the Left Platform's views, came after euro zone leaders set Greece a Sunday deadline to reach the outlines of a new bailout deal.

Greece has been given two options, either reach a new bailout deal or crashing out of the euro. Germany and not Athens keep the upper hand in negotiations. Germany will presumably continue its hard-line stance defying the stentorian 'No' vote in Sunday's referendum. But if Berlin's firm stance does not lead to a deal - which in order to be reached requires the Greek government to back down from its positions - then Germany is at risk of losing too much from the developments which will lead Greece give up the euro for the drachma. More importantly Germany will lose credibility and leadership, without which Europe, which builds under German hegemony, will very soon have no other future but to dissolve.

In those crucial moments, no matter which Germany's stance will be, Greece is obliged to show consistency and firmness by respecting the immense popular mandate and reaching an agreement which is in line with the government's election pledges. At the same time Greece should be prepared for all possible outcomes. A procrustean deal will exhaust the Greek people and economy and will be the worse outcome for Greece's future. It will literally be a catastrophe! A deal which will not halt austerity, which will not provide for adequate financial liquidity and will not write off Greece's debt, has nothing to offer to our country. On the contrary it will only deepen and perpetuate the crisis.

Greece does not have a single option but many. Even if these options are hard and rough. However, the worst, the most exhausting, the most humiliating and intolerable option of them all will be to surrender and pay allegiance to the "Institutions" of the EU, the ECB and the IMF.
