The Greek finance minister Yannis Varoufakis has said he will resign if the Greek people vote 'Yes' in Sunday's referendum.
When asked in an interview with Bloomberg TV if he would still be finance minister on Monday if the result is a Yes, he replied:
“We have said if there’s a Yes, we will sign the deal that was on offer on the dotted line. We are unreconstructed democrats, after all.”
But if that happens there would be changes within the Greek government, Varoufakis implied:
“Personally I will not sign a new 'extend and pretend' agreement that doesn’t learn from the mistakes of the past, and tackle vital issues such as debt sustainability”
And he reiterates that he doesn’t have the “moral right” to sign a deal that doesn’t include debt restructuring. But even if he does resign as finance minister, he’ll still be an MP.
Varoufakis expressed his confidence that the Greek people will vote No:
The Greek finance minister has said he wants to reach a deal with Greece's European creditors the day after the referendum result. He also denied that a 'No' vote will lead to Grexit.
“we will start talks on a new agreement, and believe you me, there will be an agreement.”
The minister said he hasn't waited on ATM line alongside common people to withdraw the daily cash withdrewal limit of €60 allowed under capital controls that came into force on Monday, because it would be "inappropriate". But he said that he and his wife are "living a very frugal life at the moment".
