Pro-EU protesters gathered in Athens despite heavy rain

NEWSROOM IEFIMERIDA.GR

Tens of thousands of people descended on Syntagma square on Tuesday to show their support for staying in the eurozone.

Over the past 24 hours two different demonstrations took place on Athens' central square: one to reject additional austerity measures and the other to push for Greece to agree to the terms in order to keep the financial spigot open.

As the Telegraph reports: the crowd that turned out for the "Yes" rally were very different to those who attended the "No" rally organised by the ruling Syriza party the night before. While that was a festival-style mix of trade unionists, academics, and dreadlocked activists, this was an altogether sombre affair, with a notably bigger presence of business people in suits.

Heavy rain didn't stop the Pro-Europe protest. Demonstrators were holding umbrellas and chanting "Europe! Europe!" urging Greeks to vote in favor of a bail-out deal in Sunday's referendum

Opposition politicians from center-right and center-left parties, including legislators attended the rally, held under the motto "We're staying in Europe." The mayors or Athens and Salonika, Giorgos Kaminis and Yannis Boutaris were also present.
