Greece will not make a key dept repayment to the IMF

NEWSROOM IEFIMERIDA.GR

Greece delayed a key debt payment to the International Monetary Fund planned to bundle four payments due in June into a single 1.6 billion euro lump sum which is now due on June 30.

It was the first time in five years of crisis that Greece has postponed a repayment on its 240 billion euro bailouts from euro zone governments and the IMF.

IMF rules allow borrowers to combine payments of principal due in a calendar month, but the provision has been used only once before -- by Zambia in the mid-1980s.

At the end of this month, Athens also faces a further 3.4 billion euros to the ECB.

If Greece fails to make the payments, the country could possibly see the introduction of capital controls, closure of banks, and the government issuing IOUs to keep the public sector financially viable. the IMF would issue an escalating series of warnings that could result in Greece being kicked out of the fund after two years.

Sources close to the government told iefimerida.gr, on condition of anonymity as they are not authorized to speak about the matter, that Prime Minister Tsipras plans not to make the IMF payment.

"We hope to reach an agreement soon and that the IMF payment will an unimportant discussion" Tsipras told journalists when asked if Greece would make its scheduled IMF payment.
