German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President François Hollande and Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras were expected to have a meeting on the sidelines of EU-Latin American and Carribean summit with a the prospect to reach a political agreement on technical proposals submitted earlier by Greece.
A cash-for-reform deal would save the country from bankruptcy and a possible exit from the euro zone.
But the three-way meeting looks doubtful as the updated proposals submitted by the Greek government to its creditors were seen as insufficient and no new talks with Greek representatives were scheduled for Tuesday.
A French insider has told Reuters that meeting with Tsipras is not scheduled in Hollande’s diary “No meeting is planned at this stage - we’ll see what happens when we get there.”
If Angela Merkel and François Hollande do give Alexis Tsipras the cold shoulder tonight, the Greek crisis could then switch to the Euro Working Group in Bratislava, Slovakia.
Nevertheless the Greek Prime Minister's office has included a meeting with Merkel and Hollande at the PM's schedule of meetings with other heads of state and European officials.
Meanwhile sources within the Greek government claim that Merkel and Hollande canceled the meeting after a non paper released by the Prime Minister's office Wednesday morning. The sources also claimed that scenarios about Merkel and Hollande canceling the meeting emerged after the Greek government made clear that no comment was made or official answer given concerning the Greek proposals submitted earlier this week to European Commissioner Pierre Moscovici
