Greek authorities have arrested one of Turkey’s most wanted criminals, Ramazan Baygara.
The arrest took place in the Ambelokipi district of Athens on Friday, May 10, authorities help.
Baygara, who had been on the run, is accused of heading an organized crime group with its roots in Adana, Turkey. His criminal activities spanned drug trafficking, arms dealing, and other illicit enterprises.
The arrest came after Turkish authorities issued 14 warrants for his arrest, including charges related to premeditated homicide.
Authorities in Athens say Greece’s national intelligence service, or else EYP, initially tracked a duo of Baygara’s accomplices in Chania, Crete. The two Turkish nationals had previously facilitated his escape from Turkey.
Subsequent surveillance efforts led to Baygara’s arrest in Ambelokipi area, where police closely monitored him for days, arresting him as he left a building on May 10.
Baygara’s arrest marks a significant achievement in international law enforcement cooperation, busting a major international criminal network.
The “Bayğaras” organization, named after Baygara himself, had gained notoriety for its involvement in drug and arms trafficking. Additionally, it maintained connections with networks operating migrant smuggling.
Interpol had previously issued a “Red Notice” for Baygara, alerting authorities worldwide to his fugitive status.
Now detained in Greece, he awaits extradition proceedings to face justice in Turkey.
Authorities say the successful operation underscores the importance of cross-border collaboration in combating organized crime and ensuring the safety of communities across Europe.
