In a significant move underscoring Greece’s commitment to healthcare and minority rights, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis visited the construction site of the new general hospital in Komotini, northern Greece.
This visit comes on the heels of Mr. Mitsotakis’ meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, highlighting the hospital’s role in serving the region’s Muslim minority.
The new hospital, poised to revolutionize the National Health System, will replace the aging Sismanoglio, expected to become a “beacon of modernity and inclusivity,” as officials put it.
With a capacity of 165 beds,the hospital aims to foster a new level of patient care and staff-patient relationships.
Mr. Mitsotakis’ tour emphasized the hospital’s digital innovation and its significance in an area marked by national sensitivities. The establishment, which is part of a nearly 450 million euros initiative funded by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, symbolizes a step forward in addressing the needs of all community members, irrespective of their religious background.
The Prime Minister’s talks with President Erdogan earlier this week also touched upon the broader issues of equality and citizenship, reinforcing Greece’s legal autonomy in managing such matters while also pointing to the hospital as a concrete example of the country’s dedication to serving its diverse populace.
The timely completion of this project is anticipated to set a new standard for healthcare infrastructure in Greece.
