This accident gives rise to safety and security involving watersports, not least as Greece’s peak tourism season is set to begin.

According to the Safe Water Sports annual report, in 2021, 342 people lost their lives in water-related incidents in Greece, with the majority occurring at sea. Experts say the finds highlight the need for stringent safety measures and regulations to protect both tourists and locals engaging in such activities.

Greece has implemented mandatory lifeguard coverage on highly frequented beaches during its peak tourist seasons, beginning from June 1.

Authorities, however, are calling for heightened vigilance and compliance with safety regulations among water sports providers.

They say the goal is to ensure that Greece’s reputation as a top destination for sea sports is matched by its commitment to the safety of its visitors.
